Four-time world champion Max Verstappen turned up the heat on McLaren’s title contenders by claiming pole position for Saturday’s United States Grand Prix sprint race in Austin.

The Red Bull driver delivered a flawless final lap to beat Lando Norris by just 0.071 seconds, with championship leader Oscar Piastri third, three-tenths adrift.

“It was tight through all the segments,” Verstappen said. “I just tried to put it all together — it wasn’t easy, but it came together in the end. I expect a tough battle in the sprint, but that’s what we all want to see.”

The result marked Verstappen’s third consecutive sprint pole in Austin and his 10th overall since the format began in 2022. Having already reduced Piastri’s championship lead by 41 points, he has reignited his bid for a fifth world title, closing in from 63 points behind with six races remaining.

Team principal Laurent Mekies praised Verstappen’s “remarkable ability to outperform the car,” adding that Red Bull now believes it can “fight to win every remaining race.”
