Veiga fires Porto to Europa League win as Nice’s slump continues

Gabri Veiga’s first-half brace put Porto firmly on the path to a 3–0 victory over Nice, handing the visitors their fifth loss in as many UEFA Europa League (UEL) outings this season.
Already struggling after four consecutive defeats in all competitions, Nice could hardly have imagined a worse start. Within 19 seconds, Porto burst forward from kickoff, with Pepe pulling the ball back for Veiga, whose low strike—deflected off Dante—beat Yehvann Diouf to open the scoring. It was a nightmare beginning for the 42-year-old centre-back, restored to the starting lineup and wearing the captain’s armband.
To their credit, Nice responded with spirit. Terem Moffi got in behind the defence in the 19th minute, only to lash his effort over the bar. Moments later, Veiga showed how it should be done, doubling Porto’s lead 12 minutes before the break. Victor Froholdt threaded a perfectly weighted ball across the edge of the box, and the Spaniard took a touch, steadied himself, and curled a superb finish into the top corner. Having arrived with just one goal all season, Veiga had trebled his tally inside 31 minutes.
Dante’s woes deepened early in the second half. After a VAR review, he was penalised for a foul on Samu inside the box. Samu calmly converted the spot-kick—sending Diouf the wrong way—for his 10th goal of the campaign, putting Porto out of sight within 16 minutes of the restart.
Nice later squandered two chances to pull one back, as Kevin Carlos and Jonathan Clauss both fired over in quick succession.
Porto’s win extends their unbeaten home run this season to eight matches (W7), lifting them to 10 points in the UEL and placing them in a strong position to reach the knockout rounds.
Nice, meanwhile, remain without a point and have now failed to win in 15 consecutive main-draw European fixtures (D4) — a new, unwanted record for the longest winless streak by a French club.
