Galatasaray’s 33-match unbeaten home run came to a halt on Tuesday night as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise earned a fully deserved 1–0 win at Rams Park in the UEFA Champions League.

Despite the contrasting form of the two clubs in this season’s competition—Galatasaray riding a wave of confidence and USG still finding their feet—the visitors controlled much of the first half. Their first major chance arrived just before the half-hour mark, when a deflected cross fell kindly for Promise David. The striker, however, failed to capitalise, steering his close-range attempt narrowly wide of the right post.

Galatasaray had won three consecutive Champions League games coming into the match, equalling their total from their previous 33 main-draw fixtures. But they were far from their best in the opening period. Even so, they nearly snatched the lead when Gabriel Sara unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from distance that rattled the right upright.

Moments later, Union Saint-Gilloise returned the favour. From a corner, Ross Sykes rose highest and directed a firm header off the crossbar, denying the Belgians a deserved advantage at the interval.

The Turkish Super Lig leaders needed a response after the break, yet it was the visitors who struck first. Twelve minutes into the second half, David—who moments earlier had escaped a second yellow after catching Ugurcan Cakir—found himself in the right place to put USG ahead. A clever reverse pass from Raul Florucz released Adem Zorgane down the byline, and his squared ball across goal left the Canadian with a simple tap-in from point-blank range.

Galatasaray chased an equaliser with increasing urgency. Sara forced Kjell Scherpen to save a close-range header at the near post, and from the ensuing corner the home side came agonisingly close again. A goal-line block fell invitingly to Davinson Sánchez, but the Colombian blazed over from just yards out in what proved the defining moment of a frustrating night.

Their hopes faded further when second-half substitute Arda Unyay was sent off for a second yellow card late on, compounding a disappointing performance from Okan Buruk’s side.

For Union Saint-Gilloise, the victory is a significant boost, keeping their aspirations of securing a play-off spot very much alive with three matches remaining in the league phase.
