When one of football’s worst-kept secrets — Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid — was finally confirmed, the reaction from Liverpool supporters was entirely predictable.

Few fanbases value loyalty as deeply as those at Anfield, and watching one of their own depart — seemingly motivated by ambition and financial opportunity — cut deeply. From the outside, it appeared to be a painful break from tradition.

Trent’s public ambition to one day win the Ballon d’Or may also have influenced his decision. A move to the Spanish giants seemed to offer a clearer pathway to individual recognition and global acclaim.

Yet football has a habit of defying expectations.

Injuries derail Madrid dream

Alexander-Arnold’s time in Madrid has been plagued by physical setbacks. A muscle injury suffered during a heavy Club World Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain proved to be the beginning of a troubling pattern.

Since then, he has missed significant time with hamstring and thigh problems, sidelining him for large portions of the campaign. As a result, he has made just eight LaLiga appearances, only three of them lasting the full 90 minutes.

Several substitute outings lasting fewer than 10 minutes underline his lack of continuity, which has contributed to a modest return of one league assist in the 2024/25 season.

While he registered two assists in the Club World Cup and featured sporadically in the Champions League, the 27-year-old has struggled to rediscover rhythm and confidence.

Exit signals emerge

Reports suggest that following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal as head coach, new manager Álvaro Arbeloa has informed Alexander-Arnold that he is no longer central to his plans.

If accurate, it would mark a dramatic fall from grace and bring a premature end to what has been a deeply frustrating spell in Spain.

Financial realities limit options

With uncertainty growing around his future, speculation has intensified. Manchester City are among the clubs reportedly monitoring the situation.

However, finances remain a major obstacle. Alexander-Arnold is under contract until 2029 and earns close to £275,000 per week. Real Madrid are not under immediate pressure to sell, meaning any transfer would demand a substantial fee.

Only a handful of clubs could realistically meet those financial demands.

Could Liverpool welcome him back?

During his Liverpool career, Alexander-Arnold produced remarkable numbers: 18 goals and 64 assists in league competition, alongside major contributions in domestic and European tournaments.

He became one of the most creative full-backs in Premier League history and a cornerstone of Jürgen Klopp’s success.

With Jeremie Frimpong now established on the right and Conor Bradley emerging as a reliable option, Liverpool are well covered. Yet few players possess Trent’s unique passing range and vision.

The question remains: would the Anfield faithful forgive his departure and welcome him home?

Premier League alternatives

A move to Manchester United seems unlikely, given the historic rivalry — something Michael Owen experienced firsthand.

Arsenal appear well stocked on the right with Ben White and Jurrien Timber, while Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard dominate the right-sided attacking areas.

Chelsea boast Reece James and a host of attacking options, though their financial power makes them a realistic contender.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have both the resources and the tactical flexibility to integrate Alexander-Arnold, especially amid uncertainty over several senior defenders.

What would buyers be getting?

Despite recent struggles, Alexander-Arnold’s underlying numbers remain impressive.

Over the past three seasons, his passing accuracy has steadily improved, particularly in cup competitions. He has completed more than 1,800 forward passes into the final third and recorded over 700 ball recoveries, while winning a significant percentage of his tackles.

Defensive weaknesses, often highlighted by critics, are not as pronounced in the data as perception suggests.

However, one area remains problematic: crossing efficiency. Since 2022/23, fewer than a quarter of his crosses have found a teammate, a figure that has hindered his overall output.

A career at a crossroads

Players in their prime rarely become available under such circumstances. Despite his current difficulties, Alexander-Arnold remains a rare profile: a defender with playmaker instincts and elite distribution.

Wherever he ends up, any club willing to invest in him will be acquiring a player with both pedigree and motivation.

After months of frustration and uncertainty, Trent Alexander-Arnold has something he has rarely possessed in his career — a point to prove. And that determination to restore his reputation could yet define the next chapter of his journey.
