Another week brings another major test for Thomas Frank and his Tottenham Hotspur side, as Manchester City visit north London in a fixture that could prove pivotal for Spurs’ season.

With inconsistent results continuing to plague the Lilywhites, Tottenham risk slipping as low as 16th in the Premier League this weekend if results elsewhere go against them. Such a scenario would leave them uncomfortably close to the relegation zone, just five points above the bottom three.

Inconsistent League Form Raises Concerns

Tottenham’s struggles in domestic competition have become a recurring theme. A series of below-par league performances has placed mounting pressure on Frank, despite the club’s more encouraging European campaign.

Spurs impressed in the Champions League, securing a place in the round of 16 after finishing fourth in the league phase. A decisive final-day victory over Eintracht Frankfurt underlined their continental credentials, while wins over Borussia Dortmund further highlighted their potential.

However, those positive results were offset by disappointing domestic displays, including a home defeat to West Ham and a draw with relegation-threatened Burnley, exposing their ongoing inconsistency.

They now face a Manchester City side closing in on the summit, sitting just four points behind league leaders Arsenal after the Gunners’ surprise defeat to Manchester United.

Guardiola’s City Hit Top Gear

City’s resurgence under Pep Guardiola in the second half of the season is a familiar pattern, and Spurs will be wary of a team hitting peak form at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Guardiola recently reached 400 victories as City manager in just 569 matches, underlining his remarkable impact. He achieved the milestone faster than both Arsène Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson and has recorded more wins at the club than any other manager by a significant margin.

His long-term influence and tactical stability contrast sharply with Tottenham’s recent managerial turnover — a factor that continues to hinder long-term progress.

Pressure Mounts on Frank

Frank currently finds himself under growing scrutiny, following in the footsteps of Ange Postecoglou, Nuno Espírito Santo, and Antonio Conte, all of whom struggled to deliver sustained success.

Spurs are winless in their last five Premier League matches, drawing three and losing two. It is the fourth such run in the past two seasons, a stark contrast to the club’s relative consistency over the previous decade.

Interestingly, Tottenham have often performed better against City at the Etihad Stadium than at home, with most of their recent goals in the fixture coming away from north London. Guardiola has also suffered more league defeats against Spurs than against any other opponent.

Set Pieces Offer Spurs Hope

With Tottenham ranking just 14th in the league for total shots this season, Frank may once again rely heavily on set pieces as a primary attacking outlet.

Spurs have been particularly effective from corners, scoring 12 times from such situations — one of the best records in the division. They have also registered 10 headed goals, more than local rivals Arsenal this season.

Cristian Romero and other aerial threats remain central to this strategy, while 13 different players have found the net so far, highlighting the team’s shared attacking responsibility.

Injury Woes for Both Sides

Injuries could play a decisive role in the contest. Tottenham are without several key players, including Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, Rodrigo Bentancur, Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison.

City are also missing important figures such as Joško Gvardiol, Rúben Dias, John Stones, and Mateo Kovačić, while Jeremy Doku faces a late fitness test.

Erling Haaland is expected to lead the visitors’ attack, hoping to improve on his modest recent return of one goal in six matches across competitions.

A Test of Character

With form, fitness, and confidence all under scrutiny, Spurs face a daunting challenge against one of Europe’s most formidable sides. While Manchester City arrive as clear favorites, Tottenham’s strength from set pieces and history of troubling Guardiola’s teams may offer a narrow path to resistance.

Whether that single weapon proves enough to prevent another damaging defeat remains to be seen.
