Tottenham edge past Aston Villa in financial battle for Conor Gallagher

Tottenham have underlined their financial strength by seemingly edging ahead of Aston Villa in the race to sign Conor Gallagher.
On Monday, Spurs intensified their efforts to persuade the Atletico Madrid midfielder to opt for a move to north London, despite significant competition from Villa. The two Premier League clubs had been locked in a direct battle for Gallagher’s signature, with both presenting compelling cases.
While Aston Villa were able to offer a potentially more attractive short-term sporting project, Tottenham appear to have gained the upper hand by making a decisive move on personal terms. Gallagher is understood to be earning up to £200,000 per week in Spain when bonuses are included, meaning Spurs needed to act boldly to demonstrate their intent.
Initially, Tottenham explored the possibility of a loan deal, but negotiations progressed rapidly. By Monday evening, talks were centred on finalising a permanent transfer, with a fee in the region of £35 million.
Sources close to the situation indicate that Tottenham’s long-standing interest in Gallagher proved influential. The club have monitored the midfielder for over a year, and their sustained pursuit helped convince the England international of how highly he is rated and how central he could be to Ange Postecoglou’s plans.
Personal considerations have also played a key role. A return to London would allow Gallagher to be closer to his family, an important factor after his spell in Spain.
For Aston Villa, missing out on Gallagher highlights the fine margins they must navigate in the transfer market. With financial constraints in mind, Unai Emery’s side may now turn their attention towards strengthening their attacking options. Villa have recently been linked with a move for Tammy Abraham and are open to the possibility of Donyell Malen departing.
Tottenham, meanwhile, appear to have sent a clear message — not only about their spending power, but about their ambition to compete aggressively for elite-level talent. The club are hopeful of completing the Gallagher deal soon and are expected to then step up their pursuit of a high-profile attacking addition.
