Tottenham defeat Brentford as Xavi Simons scores first goal for the club

Ex-Brentford boss Thomas Frank faced his former club as Tottenham Hotspur ended a five-game Premier League winless run with a convincing 2-0 triumph at the Brentford Community Stadium.
Just a week after facing criticism from some Spurs fans for an error against Fulham, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was called into action early to deny the in-form Igor Thiago at the near post. Tottenham quickly capitalized on that vital stop, taking the lead a minute later when Richarlison tapped in Xavi Simons’ perfectly timed pass in the 25th minute. Simons had raced onto Pedro Porro’s threaded ball behind Brentford’s defense, setting up the Brazilian striker for an easy finish.
Simons soon went from creator to scorer himself with a brilliant solo effort late in the first half. Winning possession deep in his own half, the Dutch summer signing surged forward and slotted a low shot past Caoimhin Kelleher, netting his first Premier League goal in style.
The second half saw Nathan Collins almost gift Tottenham a third when he allowed Djed Spence a one-on-one chance, but Kelleher produced a strong save to keep Brentford in the game. Tottenham remained the more threatening side, with Mohammed Kudus seeing a late effort ruled out for offside before being substituted in the closing minutes.
Brentford’s frustrations continued as Thiago fired a promising chance into the sidenetting late on, ensuring Tottenham celebrated their third league clean sheet of the season.
The victory lifts Tottenham to eighth in the table, marking their fourth successive win over Brentford in head-to-head encounters. Meanwhile, Frank’s former side drop to 14th after their fourth consecutive winless away game.
