Oswin Appollis is enjoying a rich vein of form that has all but secured his place in South Africa national football team’s squad for the 2026 World Cup later this year. However, his rise follows a difficult spell in which he came close to stepping away from football altogether.

At just 24, Appollis has already faced the game’s ups and downs, dealing with repeated setbacks and moments that saw his passion for football waver.

Now, though, he has emerged as one of Bafana Bafana’s most influential figures. Over the past 18 months, he has scored eight international goals and provided eight assists—amassing 16 goal contributions in just 24 appearances.

It’s the kind of impact the national side has not seen from a single player in many years.

He continued to showcase his influence in the 1-1 draw against Panama national football team in Durban on Friday, creating three chances for himself and his teammates—at least one of which could have further boosted his already impressive numbers.

Teenage talent

Oswin Appollis was born in Cape Town and raised in the gang-affected suburb of Bishop Lavis.

He began his development at Ajax Cape Town’s academy before moving to SuperSport United in 2018 at just 17.

In 2019, shortly after turning 18, he made his Betway Premiership debut against Stellenbosch FC, with then coach Kaitano Tembo giving him his first senior appearance.

However, the next three seasons proved frustrating. Opportunities were limited, with only five substitute appearances for SuperSport. A loan spell at University of Pretoria FC in the 2020/21 season offered some relief, where he made 12 appearances (eight starts) and scored twice.

Return home

A lack of game time eventually led Appollis to leave SuperSport and return to Cape Town, where he even considered walking away from football altogether after a difficult early career.

Without a club and struggling for motivation, his turning point came through a call from former SuperSport Diski Challenge coach Kwanele Kopo.

“He was the only one who reached out to me at that time,” Appollis recalled. “He coached me in the MDC at SuperSport. When he heard I was back home, he called and asked what was going on.

“I told him everything, and he said, ‘This is what I want you to do: come back and play for me. One day you’ll make the Under-23 national team and hopefully Bafana.’ I’m very grateful for what he did.

“He’s someone I’ll never forget. Without him, I don’t think I’d be where I am today with South Africa national football team and Orlando Pirates.

“The most important thing for me was finding that hunger to get back on the pitch. Being at home wasn’t easy—people kept asking questions, and that made things even harder.”

Back at it

Oswin Appollis got his career back on track when he reunited with coach Kwanele Kopo at Pretoria Callies ahead of the 2022/23 season—a move that proved to be a turning point.

He featured prominently that campaign, making 30 appearances (20 starts) and scoring six goals, performances that quickly drew interest from bigger clubs. Polokwane City secured his signature, and he immediately established himself as a key player.

Across two seasons, Appollis became one of the team’s standout performers, racking up 60 appearances (56 starts) and scoring eight goals from the left wing. His consistency did not go unnoticed, catching the attention of national team coach Hugo Broos.

A move to Orlando Pirates followed at the start of the 2025/26 season, where he played a key role in their success in the MTN8 and Carling Knockout, while also helping fuel a serious push for the league title.

International star

Appollis made his debut for South Africa national football team in a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Rwanda national football team in Butare in November 2023, a match played under difficult circumstances.

He came on after 75 minutes for Yaya Sithole. His second appearance followed in the Africa Cup of Nations third-place playoff against DR Congo national football team in February 2024, before earning his first start in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Algeria national football team the following month.

From June 2024 onward, he cemented his place in the squad. His first international goals came in a crucial 3-2 victory over South Sudan national football team during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Since then, Appollis has been in outstanding form, scoring eight goals in 18 appearances—including five in his last seven matches. Of his 24 caps, 19 have come as a starter, with each of his last 10 appearances in the starting lineup.

During this period, no other Bafana Bafana player has matched his goalscoring output, underlining his growing importance to the national side.

Versatility

Although Oswin Appollis has spent much of his career operating on the left wing, his ability to adapt across multiple positions adds significant value for coach Hugo Broos.

He featured on the right flank in the recent match against Panama national football team to accommodate Tshepang Moremi, highlighting his tactical flexibility. In addition, he is capable of playing through the centre when required.

Such versatility is especially important in major tournaments like the World Cup, where squads must cope with injuries and suspensions. In that regard, Appollis offers a crucial advantage, further strengthening his case as an indispensable part of South Africa national football team’s plans.
