Ta’ Xbiex Move Into Joint-Third Following Hard-Fought Win Over St. George’s

Ta’ Xbiex continued their climb toward the promotion places in the BOV Amateur League II with a professional 2-0 victory over St. George’s. The result sees Ta’ Xbiex move to 18 points, joining Dingli Swallows and Mdina Knights in a three-way tie for third place.
Early Pressure from the Pioneers
The match began with a flurry of activity from the “Pioneers,” who were desperate to overturn a disappointing run of form. St. George’s nearly took the lead just two minutes in when Kurt Zahra’s curling free-kick forced a fine save from Carmelo Caruana. Zahra remained a threat, firing another effort narrowly wide in the 7th minute, followed shortly by a Sebastian Perdomo strike that sailed just over the crossbar.
Despite the Bormla side dominating the opening half-hour and seeing a Sean Ellul effort deflected for a corner, they were unable to capitalize on their territorial advantage.
Ta’ Xbiex Strike Against the Run of Play
The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute when Ta’ Xbiex struck with clinical efficiency. Against the run of play, Andrei Spiteri found space and unleashed an excellent strike that beat Clive Caruana to give Ta’ Xbiex a 1-0 lead heading into the interval.
Tactical Control and the Counter-Attack Seal It
St. George’s attempted to maintain their intensity in the second half but found Ta’ Xbiex far more organized defensively. The Pioneers struggled to find clear sights of goal as the match wore on.
Ta’ Xbiex nearly doubled their advantage in the 77th minute when Antoine Attard worked his way into the box, only to be denied by a solid save from Caruana. However, Attard would not be denied a second time. Deep into stoppage time, with St. George’s pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Attard rounded off a classic counter-attack to make it 2-0 and secure the three points.
Amateur League II Standings
