FC Fredericia suffered relegation from the Danish Superliga on Monday evening after Randers FC earned a dramatic 2-2 home draw against Odense Boldklub, who also saw goalkeeper Viljar Myhra sent off during the contest.

Despite dropping points, OB secured eighth place in the Danish Superliga standings and remain in contention for a playoff spot that could lead to qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Meanwhile, the result guarantees Randers FC another season in Denmark’s top division, while FC Fredericia join Vejle Boldklub in relegation.

The entertaining draw came in the penultimate round of the relegation playoffs and leaves OB with a possible route into Europe. If FC Copenhagen defeat FC Midtjylland in Thursday’s Danish Cup final, OB will face the third-placed side from the championship playoffs for a place in the Conference League.

FC Nordsjaelland, Viborg FF, and Sonderjyske are all still in the race to finish third.

OB made the brighter start on Monday night, and after only eight minutes, Jan Fiete Arp showed his class with an impressive moment of quality, reminding fans of the talent that once earned him appearances for FC Bayern Munich and Germany’s youth national teams.

The attacking star opened the scoring in style, curling a superb direct free-kick beyond the reach of Paul Izzo to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. However, after 29 minutes, the match swung when Viljar Myhra was sent off for a clumsy foul on fellow Norwegian Martin Sjolstad, reducing OB to ten men.

The home side, who marked the 20th anniversary of their first cup triumph with commemorative shirts and tributes recalling their 1-0 win over Esbjerg in the 2006 final, initially struggled to make their numerical advantage count. But early in the second half, they levelled through a well-placed header from Nikolas Dyhr.

Randers FC then turned the game around shortly after, as Thibault Klidje finished clinically after a precise delivery from Elies Mahmoud.

However, OB responded quickly. Seven minutes later, Leeroy Owusu reacted first to Jan Fiete Arp’s clever cross to restore parity for the ten-man visitors. Despite the drama, neither side could find a winner, and the match ended all square.
