When these two English heavyweights collide, fireworks are almost guaranteed — and this weekend’s Premier League showdown at Anfield promises to be no different.

Red Devils Seeking Revenge and Redemption

Since their humbling 7–0 defeat at Anfield in March 2023, Manchester United have managed to steady the ship somewhat against Liverpool. The Red Devils have earned two draws on Merseyside — 0–0 in December 2023 and 2–2 in January 2025.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were beaten 4–3 by United in the FA Cup at Old Trafford in March 2024 and held 2–2 there a month later. Their only victory in the last five meetings came under Arne Slot, a 3–0 triumph at the Theatre of Dreams in September 2024.

For United boss Rúben Amorim, this fixture may have come at just the right time.

Liverpool’s Form Wobble

Liverpool stumbled into the international break after three straight defeats across all competitions, facing criticism for repeatedly surrendering leads. Despite often recovering to win, their defensive fragility has been evident — with only two clean sheets in their last 16 matches and four games this season in which they’ve conceded twice.

That could offer encouragement for United, who have won two of their last three matches and may sense an opportunity to spark a revival from their current 10th-place standing.

Fortress Anfield

However, Amorim’s men face a daunting task. Liverpool have lost just two of their last 53 home league matches (W41, D10), while United are winless in eight away Premier League games (D2, L6).

Adding to the challenge, Liverpool have lost only one of the last 14 league meetings between the sides (W7, D6) and are unbeaten in nine at Anfield (W4, D5). Avoiding defeat again on Sunday would see the Reds become just the second team in Premier League history to go 10 or more consecutive home games unbeaten against United.

Salah the United Slayer

Mo Salah has tormented United more than any other player in Premier League history, with 13 goals and 19 total goal involvements against them. The Egyptian King, urged on by the Anfield faithful, will look to extend that record. Amorim may respond by switching to a back four, rather than leaving Matthijs de Ligt to deal with Salah’s threat on his own.

Fernandes the Focal Point

For United, captain Bruno Fernandes remains the heartbeat of the side. His two league goals this season match Salah’s tally, while his 19 chances created and 423 passes completed are the highest in United’s squad for 2025/26.

Interestingly, United lead the Premier League for total shots (110) and sit second for shots on target (34). Yet, with a conversion rate of just 11%, they rank only 18th in efficiency — a statistic that highlights their key weakness.

Tactical Battle in Midfield

Liverpool have completed the third-most passes in the league this season (3,679), and Slot will likely look to dominate possession and pull United out of shape. Both sides tend to peak late in matches: Liverpool score and concede most often in the final 15 minutes, while United’s vulnerabilities come just after the hour mark.

Given that neither team has featured in a goalless draw for at least 14 matches, goals seem inevitable in this Super Sunday clash.

Team News

Liverpool are set to welcome back Ryan Gravenberch, who recovered from a knock during international duty, while Ibrahima Konaté has also returned to fitness. Alisson Becker, however, remains sidelined.

For United, Noussair Mazraoui could return as Amorim looks to mastermind a rare Anfield upset.

If Liverpool score first, they’ve gone on to win every time this season. Conversely, United have lost every match in which they’ve conceded first — a statistic that may prove decisive when these two titans meet once again on Super Sunday.
