Shamrock Rovers will bring their European campaign to a close with a home clash against Ħamrun Spartans, as both sides play for pride with elimination from the UEFA Conference League already confirmed.

Rovers’ continental journey never truly gathered momentum and deteriorated further following their domestic league and cup double secured in October. Consecutive Conference League defeats sealed their fate, yet there are still positives for Stephen Bradley’s side. The Hoops have found the net in four of their five league-phase matches, offering hope that they can at least finish the year on a winning note. However, home form in Europe remains a concern, with Rovers winning just one of their last six UEFA home fixtures (D2, L3) and failing to score in four of those matches.

Ħamrun Spartans arrive in Dublin with their focus arguably elsewhere. The reigning Maltese champions are locked in a tight title race at home, with only three rounds remaining and a four-point gap to bridge after weekend defeat. While this Conference League encounter is technically a dead rubber, motivation still exists, as defeat would see them overtaken by Rovers in the standings. The Spartans will also be keen to end a seven game winless run in European away matches (D2, L5), a spell that includes five games without scoring.

This fixture marks Ħamrun’s first-ever meeting with Irish opposition. Shamrock Rovers, by contrast, have fond memories of their only previous tie against Maltese opposition, cruising to a 3-0 aggregate victory over Hibernians in the 2022/23 Champions League.

Recent trends suggest goals could be on the menu. Five of Rovers’ last seven competitive games saw both teams score, while seven of Ħamrun’s last 11 UEFA matches produced over 2.5 goals. That said, the visitors have never won a European away match by a margin of two goals or more.

Graham Burke has been Rovers’ standout performer in this competition, registering either a goal or an assist in each of their last three Conference League outings (G2, A1). For Ħamrun, N’Dri Koffi continues to impress, recording his third assist of the campaign on matchday five before scoring domestically at the weekend. Rovers are expected to be without Joshua Honohan and Daniel Mandroiu, while Ħamrun welcome back Vincenzo Polito following suspension.

With Ħamrun’s domestic priorities looming large, Shamrock Rovers look well placed to sign off their year with a morale-boosting home victory.
