Shamrock Rovers end Ħamrun Spartans’ European campaign in Dublin

Ħamrun Spartans brought their historic UEFA Conference League league-phase campaign to an end with a 3–1 defeat away to Shamrock Rovers at the Tallaght Stadium, in a match heavily influenced by a controversial first-half red card.
The Maltese champions were reduced to ten men after just 27 minutes when Joseph Mbong was shown a straight red card, a turning point that allowed the Irish champions to take control and claim their first European victory of the campaign. Shamrock finished the league phase on four points, while Ħamrun exited the competition with three.
Team News
Spartans coach Giacomo Modica welcomed back Vincenzo Polito following suspension and handed a rare European start to Nikolai Micallef at left-back. Saliou Thioune returned to the starting line-up after missing the previous match against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Ryan Camenzuli was ruled out through injury, while Brazilian midfielder Eder was not deemed fit enough to start.
Shamrock Rovers, meanwhile, included highly-rated 16-year-old Victor Ozhianvuna in their starting XI, with Roberto Lopes captaining the side.
Match Report
The hosts started on the front foot, with Henry Bonello called into action early to deny Rory Gaffney from close range. Ħamrun responded well, pressing high and causing problems from set-pieces, with N’Dri Koffi twice going close.
Shamrock took the lead on 13 minutes when referee Marek Radina awarded a penalty after Polito was adjudged to have handled the ball. Graham Burke calmly converted from the spot.
Ħamrun reacted immediately and were rewarded on 20 minutes when Koffi finished from close range to level the score, continuing his impressive European form.
The game turned decisively seven minutes later when Mbong was sent off for a reckless challenge, leaving the Spartans with a numerical disadvantage for over an hour.
Just before the interval, Shamrock regained the lead as Daniel Grant tapped home at the far post following a Burke cross to make it 2–1.
Modica reshuffled at half-time, introducing Jovan Cadjenovic and Stijn Meijer, but Shamrock continued to apply pressure after the restart. Bonello produced several important saves to keep Ħamrun in the contest, while Eder was later introduced to strengthen midfield resistance.
Despite their efforts, the Maltese champions were unable to find an equaliser, and Shamrock sealed the result deep into stoppage time when substitute John McGovern made it 3–1.
Conclusion
Despite the defeat, Ħamrun Spartans conclude their maiden league-phase European campaign having written a new chapter in Maltese football history, with performances that underlined their growing competitiveness on the continental stage.
