“Scared” Holger Rune caught in Qatar as Iranian missiles put Doha in state of emergency

Holger Rune is reportedly “really scared” after being caught in Doha amid Iranian missile strikes that have placed the Qatari capital under a state of emergency.
The Danish tennis star had been due to fly from Doha to Los Angeles at 7:40 a.m. on Sunday. However, Rune — who has been staying in Qatar to rehabilitate an Achilles tendon injury at the renowned Aspetar — is now stranded as tensions escalate in the region.
According to Reuters, “new, powerful explosions” were heard across Doha early Sunday morning following Iranian missile launches targeting US bases in the Middle East, including locations in Qatar.
Rune’s mother and manager, Aneke Rune, described a harrowing 24 hours for the 21-year-old and his team in an interview with TV2 Sport.
“It’s been a wild night. We didn’t get much sleep. It all seems more brutal at night with the fireballs in the sky and repeated bangs,” she said. “We spent quite a bit of time at the reception, and they were super sweet, so we finally went to our rooms and slept. But Holger was really scared last night. After all, it pours in with brutal news and images of attacks everywhere around us. Our flight is, of course, canceled today, and we now have no idea when we can get out.”
The escalation follows reported US and Israeli strikes in Iran on Saturday morning, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks on American-linked targets across the region.
Qatar’s Ministry of the Interior confirmed that eight people were injured in an Iranian strike on Sunday morning, bringing the total number of injured in the country to 16. Authorities added that material damage has so far been limited but urged residents to remain indoors and only leave home in cases of emergency.
For Rune and his team, uncertainty now surrounds their departure from Doha, as the security situation continues to develop.
