Romero rips into ‘disgraceful’ squad depth after deadline

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has criticised his side’s lack of squad depth, describing it as “disgraceful” following a quiet end to the winter transfer window on Monday.
Romero was forced to leave the pitch during Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Manchester City after falling ill, adding to an already lengthy injury and fitness list that has now reached double figures. The ongoing absence of key players has contributed to a challenging first season in charge for head coach Thomas Frank.
Tottenham’s struggles have been reflected in their form, with just two wins from their last 15 Premier League matches leaving them languishing in 14th place.
Although Spurs strengthened in January by signing England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for £34 million, they also sanctioned the departure of last season’s top scorer, Brennan Johnson, who joined Crystal Palace.
Shortly after the transfer deadline passed, Romero voiced his frustration on social media. Posting on Instagram, the Argentine defender praised his teammates’ efforts before highlighting the club’s lack of options.
“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible,” Romero wrote. “I wanted to be available to help even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available — unbelievable but true and disgraceful.
“We’ll keep taking responsibility to turn this around by working hard and staying together. Thank you to the fans for always supporting us.”
Several Spurs players, including Pedro Porro, Xavi Simons, and Dominic Solanke, showed their support by liking the post.
Tottenham had attempted to sign Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo, who ultimately moved from Bournemouth to Manchester City, as well as Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, but both deals fell through.
Their only deadline-day addition was Hearts teenager James Wilson, who joined on loan with an option to buy. However, the forward is expected to feature initially for the club’s Under-21 side.
