Ricky van Wolfswinkel calls time on career with touching message

FC Twente striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel has confirmed he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.
The experienced forward has enjoyed an extensive career spanning eight clubs and more than 600 appearances. During his journey, he represented Vitesse, FC Utrecht, Sporting CP, Norwich City, Saint-Étienne, Real Betis, Basel, and FC Twente.
A consistent goalscorer throughout his career, the Dutchman has been particularly productive in the Eredivisie, netting 62 goals in 191 appearances for Twente, including nine this season.
Now 37, Van Wolfswinkel is set to hang up his boots when his contract expires in June. He shared a heartfelt retirement message through the club’s YouTube channel.
“After 18 years at the highest level, there comes a moment when you feel it is enough, and it is time,” the former Norwich City striker said. “What started as a dream grew into a life — a life filled with discipline, sacrifices and unforgettable highs, but also setbacks that made me stronger. I gave it everything I had.”
“Every training session, every match, every moment was always with a smile. I am grateful to my teammates, my coaches, my family, my wife, our kids, and everyone who supported me along the way.”
“This sport has shaped me into the person I am today — not just as a player, but as a human being. Now it is time for a new chapter, a new challenge off the pitch. I am not saying goodbye to football, only to my career as a professional athlete. Thank you for everything.”
Van Wolfswinkel has also confirmed he intends to remain involved in football in some capacity after retirement, with his next steps yet to be decided.
