Genoa have dismissed head coach Patrick Vieira following a winless start to their Serie A campaign that has left the club bottom of the table.

The Ligurian side have taken just three points from their opening nine matches, drawing three and losing six, while managing only four goals in that period.

Vieira, the former France midfielder, took charge of Genoa in November last year with the team sitting 17th and guided them to safety, finishing 13th in the Italian top flight. However, his second season began in stark contrast, prompting the club to act.

“Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the coach of the first team,” the club said in a statement on Saturday. “The technical leadership of the first team has been entrusted on an interim basis to Roberto Murgita, assisted by Domenico Criscito.”

Genoa, currently two points from safety, will face Sassuolo away on Monday as they begin life under caretaker management.
