Real Sociedad climbed five places in the LaLiga standings after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, extending the hosts’ poor run of form to six matches without a win (D1, L5).

The opening exchanges were disjointed and scrappy, with the referee unmoved by frequent appeals and play-acting from both sides. Mauro Arambarri’s early effort in the second minute, which rolled harmlessly wide of Álex Remiro’s goal, proved to be the only shot of note in the first quarter of an hour.

Sociedad gradually began to apply pressure, largely driven by Takefusa Kubo’s trickery down the right flank. However, Getafe remained dangerous on the break, with Mario Martín providing a reliable outlet to keep the visitors alert.

Persistent fouling ensured the match never found a rhythm, and despite La Real enjoying 74% possession after 30 minutes, clear chances were at a premium. The stalemate was broken unexpectedly when Brais Méndez produced a moment of quality, curling a superb left-footed half-volley from the edge of the area to give the visitors a scarcely deserved lead.

In the final action of a frustrating first half, Remiro nearly gifted Getafe an equaliser, misjudging a low effort from Juan Iglesias before watching it drift wide.

The second half offered little improvement in tempo, with offside calls and free-kicks repeatedly halting any attacking momentum. Gonçalo Guedes and Carlos Soler both wasted half-chances for Sociedad, while Getafe’s hopeful long balls rarely found a target.

A dreadful back pass just before the hour mark gifted Mikel Oyarzabal a golden opportunity, but the Sociedad captain was unable to beat a stranded David Soria. Moments later, Juanmi came agonisingly close to connecting with an inviting cross as the visitors continued to push.

Getafe rallied late on through Luis Milla, and their persistence appeared to pay off in the 90th minute when former Sociedad forward Juanmi volleyed home after a pair of flick-ons from a free-kick.

But there was still time for another twist. Deep into stoppage time, Soria failed to deal with a corner, allowing Jon Aramburu to nod into an empty net and secure a dramatic winner for La Real.

The result extends Real Sociedad’s unbeaten run to four matches (W2, D2) and sees them leapfrog Getafe in the table on goal difference.
