France captain Kylian Mbappé was in Paris on Monday to receive treatment for a knee injury, though no surgery is currently planned, his entourage confirmed to AFP.

The Real Madrid forward travelled to the French capital accompanied by members of the club’s medical staff. According to a statement from his camp, the visit was made in agreement with Madrid as part of ongoing efforts to manage the injury.

“In agreement with the club, he is undergoing further tests on his knee with the aim of optimising his follow-up care and preparing for his comeback,” the statement said. “No surgical intervention is being planned at the moment.”

Real Madrid later confirmed that tests carried out by French specialists, under the supervision of the club’s medical services, diagnosed a sprain in Mbappé’s left knee. The Spanish giants added that the 25-year-old will continue with a conservative treatment plan.

Mbappé has been dealing with discomfort in the external ligament of his left knee since the end of 2025. He missed last week’s Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica after experiencing persistent pain in training, according to sources close to the player.

Madrid were also without their top scorer for Monday’s clash with Getafe CF.

Despite speculation, Mbappé’s entourage stressed there is no disagreement between club and country regarding his recovery plan. With the World Cup approaching, the France national team is keen to have their captain fully fit.

“It was a bit of a consensus between everyone — Mbappé, the coach and the doctors — and we think the best thing is that he stops, that he recovers and comes back at 100 percent,” Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa told broadcaster Movistar.

“It’s not going to be a question of days, it will be a bit longer, but I can’t say how long, hopefully not too long,” he added.

Mbappé has scored 38 goals in 33 appearances for Real Madrid this season. It remains unclear whether he will be available for the Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City, with the first leg scheduled for March 11 and the return on March 17.

France are also set to play two friendlies in the United States later this month — against Brazil in Boston on March 26 and Colombia in Washington three days later. Their opening World Cup match is scheduled for June 16 against Senegal.
