PSV Hit Six in Style to Beat Napoli in Champions League

PSV celebrated their first UEFA Champions League victory of the season with a stunning 6-2 thrashing of Napoli, marking the first time the Dutch side has recorded back-to-back wins over Italian opposition in the competition.
The match started at a frenetic pace. Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca, filling in for the injured Rasmus Hojlund, had the first opportunity inside two minutes but dragged his shot wide. At the other end, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic was forced into action early, tipping Dennis Man’s effort—set up by a clever one-two with Ismael Saibari—behind for a corner.
PSV came close again from set-pieces. Guus Til headed over from Joey Veerman’s delivery, and Ryan Flamingo saw his header from another Veerman corner sail into the side netting. Napoli then had a brief spell of pressure, but Lucca squandered a golden chance after a sloppy touch from a Scott McTominay pass, before Leonardo Spinazzola tested PSV from distance.
The breakthrough came just after the half-hour mark when Spinazzola’s cross was emphatically headed in by McTominay to give Napoli the lead. Antonio Conte would have hoped his side could control the match from this point, but PSV quickly turned the game around.
Ivan Perisic’s cross led to an own goal from Alessandro Buongiorno, leveling the score. Barely a minute later, Saibari tucked home from close range following a rapid counterattack sparked by Perisic’s persistence, putting PSV 2-1 ahead despite Napoli’s protests for a penalty in the build-up.
After the interval, Lucca missed another header from Matteo Politano’s corner. PSV continued to press, and Mauro Junior’s dazzling run ended with a cutback that Dennis Man finished through Sam Beukema’s legs to make it 3-1. Napoli made a triple substitution, introducing former PSV attacker Noa Lang to boost their attack, but PSV remained in control, with Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s underhit pass almost leading to a fourth.
The fourth goal soon arrived, courtesy of a blistering strike by Man, before McTominay’s header offered Napoli a glimmer of hope. PSV extinguished any comeback hopes in rapid succession, with substitute Ricardo Pepi tapping in at the back post and Couhaib Driouech completing a sublime passing move with a thunderous finish to send the Philips Stadion crowd into raptures.
The victory lifts PSV to four points in the Champions League group stage, one ahead of Napoli, who have now lost consecutive matches for the first time since December, following their 1-0 defeat to Torino at the weekend.
