Newcastle United secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, leaving the hosts with just one win from their last five matches in the Premier League.

Chelsea made the brighter start and created the first half-chance when Alejandro Garnacho delivered a cross toward the far post, but academy graduate Lewis Hall reacted quickly to clear the danger before Joao Pedro could pounce.

The hosts continued to apply early pressure, with Wesley Fofana heading narrowly over from a corner before both Garnacho and Cole Palmer squandered promising chances inside the opening 15 minutes.

Despite Chelsea’s strong start, the breakthrough arrived against the run of play. Joe Willock exploited a poorly organised defensive line to race clear before squaring the ball for Anthony Gordon, who tapped in from close range to give the visitors the lead.

Fofana endured a difficult spell shortly afterwards and was fortunate to escape a red card after bringing down Gordon as the winger threatened to run through on goal. Later in the half, Chelsea were again spared when VAR opted not to review a potential penalty after Reece James appeared to pull down Malick Thiaw during a crowded corner-kick situation.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior introduced Liam Delap at half-time, and the striker almost made an instant impact by forcing a smart save from Aaron Ramsdale.

The match then settled into a familiar pattern, with Newcastle sitting deep and looking to strike on the counterattack. A misplaced pass from Robert Sanchez nearly gifted the visitors another opportunity, although Fofana recovered with a strong challenge on Gordon.

Chelsea later appealed for a penalty when Nick Woltemade appeared to bring down Palmer inside the area, but the referee waved away the protests.

The hosts pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages. Delap came close with a glancing header that drifted wide, while a stoppage-time free-kick from James struck the post. However, Newcastle held firm to secure the three points.

The result leaves Chelsea with just two wins from eight home league games this season against sides that began the round in the bottom half of the table. It also denies them the chance to draw level on points with Aston Villa and Manchester United above them, while Newcastle move up to ninth place and within six points of their hosts.
