Newcastle and PSG battle back in stalemate but miss out on Champions League top-eight finish

Paris Saint-Germain were left to rue a poorly timed three-game winless run in the UEFA Champions League, as a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in Paris saw both sides miss out on a top-eight finish.
With automatic qualification on the line, PSG started at full throttle and earned a penalty inside the opening minute. Lewis Miley was harshly punished when the ball struck his arm, but Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope came to the rescue, diving low to his left to brilliantly save Ousmane Dembélé’s spot-kick.
The visitors’ relief was short-lived, however. In the eighth minute, Vitinha was afforded too much space on the edge of the area and made Newcastle pay, curling a precise strike into the corner to give the hosts the lead.
PSG maintained their dominance and looked likely to extend their advantage, but Pope produced further fine saves to deny Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as Newcastle struggled to contain the early pressure.
Gradually, Eddie Howe’s side grew into the contest and were rewarded in first-half stoppage time with a surprise equaliser. Dan Burn kept a set-piece alive with a towering header back into the danger area, allowing Joe Willock to nod home his first Champions League goal and silence the Parc des Princes.
Newcastle thought they had completed the comeback shortly after the restart when Anthony Elanga released Willock to finish again, but the flag quickly ruled the effort out for offside.
Despite continuing to dominate possession, PSG grew increasingly nervous at the back. Dembélé squandered a promising chance inside the box, firing wide as the tension mounted.
In the closing stages, it was Newcastle who came closest to snatching victory. Harvey Barnes failed to hit the target from close range after excellent work from Anthony Gordon, letting a golden opportunity slip.
In the end, results elsewhere meant the draw was enough for neither side. Both PSG and Newcastle now face the uncertainty of the knockout play-offs after falling short of a top-eight finish.
