Naxxar Lions Secure Top 6 Spot with Grit Over Hibernians

In a dramatic turnaround from their Opening Round struggles, Naxxar Lions confirmed their place in the YoHealth Malta Premier Closing Round Top 6 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Hibernians on Saturday. The result marks a remarkable ascent for the Lions, who climbed from the penultimate spot in the first half of the season to a fourth-place finish.
Early Breakthrough
Naxxar entered the pitch with clear intent, knowing a win was non-negotiable for their Top 6 ambitions. They didn’t have to wait long to break the deadlock. In the 15th minute, Louis Pahama capitalized on a defensive lapse in the Hibernians’ box. After a deflected cross fell kindly into his path, Pahama kept his composure to slot the ball past the goalkeeper, sending the Naxxar faithful into early celebrations.
Hibernians struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, often pinned back by Naxxar’s high press. While the Paolites attempted to build from the back, the Lions’ midfield duo effectively neutralized the service to Hibs’ strikers.
Doubling the Lead
The second half saw Hibernians push higher up the pitch, leaving them vulnerable to the counter-attack. Naxxar exploited this in the 68th minute. A swift transition saw the ball moved out wide before being fed to Vitinho. The Naxxar playmaker showcased his individual brilliance, cutting inside his marker and unleashing a precise strike that doubled the lead.
Late Tension
With a two-goal cushion, Naxxar briefly looked comfortable, but the game was far from over. Just four minutes later, Hibernians clawed their way back into the contest. In the 72nd minute, Kurt Shaw rose highest during a corner set-piece, powering a header into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
The final twenty minutes turned into a defensive masterclass for the Lions. Hibernians threw numbers forward in a desperate search for an equalizer that would have dented Naxxar’s dreams, but the Lions’ backline held firm under immense pressure.
The Aftermath
The whistle sparked scenes of jubilation for Naxxar, who finish the round in fourth place with 16 points—just one point behind Marsaxlokk. They now head into the Top 6 alongside Floriana, Hamrun Spartans, Marsaxlokk, Valletta, and Gzira United.
Conversely, it is a bitter pill to swallow for Hibernians. Despite their late surge, the defeat consigns them to the Bottom 6, where they will face the likes of Sliema Wanderers and Birkirkara in the fight for final league standings.
