Napoli aim to build on Super Cup victory in Serie A title race

Buoyed by their Italian Super Cup triumph, Napoli will return to Serie A action this weekend with renewed confidence as they travel to face Cremonese.
The Partenopei secured a 2-0 victory over AC Milan in the semi-final and repeated the scoreline against Bologna in Monday’s final, clinching their first Super Cup since 2014. Antonio Conte’s impact in Naples continues to be felt, following his league title win in his debut season.
“Did you have any doubts about Conte? He’s a maestro and didn’t need long to prove he’s a winner,” club president Aurelio De Laurentiis told Mediaset after the Super Cup success. “It’s been a long time since Napoli won two trophies in a single year. I tell the fans: dream away.”
The trophy provided a timely morale boost after Napoli’s recent 2-1 defeat at Udinese, which left them third in the Serie A standings—one point behind second-placed AC Milan and two behind leaders Inter Milan.
Conte’s side now faces a Sunday trip to Cremonese, who sit 11th and are winless in their last two games. Napoli will look to Brazilian winger David Neres to continue his excellent form; he scored three of Napoli’s four Super Cup goals and has three goals in the last four league matches.
Romelu Lukaku was also named among the substitutes in Riyadh for both Super Cup matches. Though he did not feature, the Belgian striker could be nearing a return after missing the season’s start due to a pre-season thigh injury. Napoli have also managed without fellow Belgian Kevin De Bruyne for two months following hamstring surgery, but Conte has adapted effectively to these challenges.
Testing Times for Inter
While Napoli return from Saudi Arabia in high spirits, Inter Milan endured disappointment after losing to Bologna on penalties. They travel to Atalanta on Sunday, aiming to extend their three-game league winning streak. Atalanta, meanwhile, have won their last two Serie A matches and recently defeated Chelsea in the Champions League, setting up a tough encounter in Bergamo.
Serie A Top of the Table
AC Milan host struggling Hellas Verona on Sunday. The visitors sit third from bottom after failing to win in their first 13 games but have recorded back-to-back victories in recent outings.
Juventus, meanwhile, won against Roma last weekend and sit four points off the top with an extra game played. They face a Saturday trip to Pisa, second from bottom, in search of another crucial three points.
