Mikel Arteta hopeful Declan Rice will return for Arsenal’s trip to Bournemouth

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is hopeful that Declan Rice will be fit in time for Saturday night’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth, despite the midfielder continuing to manage a knee issue.
Rice was forced to miss this week’s victory over Aston Villa after picking up the injury, and Arteta confirmed the swelling has yet to fully subside.
“Not yet,” Arteta said on Friday morning when asked if the swelling had gone down. “We have another session today, so let’s see how he comes today. This will be the first training session with the players who started against Villa.”
Arteta dismissed suggestions that he regretted selecting Rice against Brighton — a decision that ultimately saw the midfielder miss the Villa match.
“No, no, no,” he said. “He managed to do it. Sometimes you get a hit and, with the adrenaline during the game, you’re able to sustain it. Then the body reacts, and it reacted probably more than we expected, unfortunately. That’s where we are.”
January plans
With the January transfer window now open, Arteta confirmed Arsenal will be active in the market, insisting there could be opportunities despite skepticism elsewhere.
“We are open to finding a solution that is short, medium or long term,” he said. “Let’s see what happens and what the news is in the next few weeks.”
Arteta was also questioned about Ethan Nwaneri’s situation, amid suggestions the teenage midfielder could be sent out on loan after struggling to secure a regular starting role.
“Every player is very important,” Arteta explained. “That role can change for different reasons and every player has a role to play. We want to talk about performance, not rotation. We have to play the best players in the best condition.”
On the value of having Nwaneri available from the bench, he added: “It’s very important. You don’t know if a player will be a finisher or a starter. It’s a joy because the players are committed and really willing to participate.”
Focus on Bournemouth
Following Manchester City’s draw at Sunderland, Arsenal now sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League table. However, Arteta was quick to downplay any talk of widening the gap.
“It’s where we are, but we can always be better,” he said. “The only thing that matters is Bournemouth.”
Asked about the energy and ambition within his squad, Arteta praised the mentality of his players.
“You can see it every single day — the desire and how much they want it,” he said. “We take it day by day and enjoy the process.”
One player embodying that approach is Leandro Trossard, who has impressed in recent weeks.
“I think he’s improved every season,” Arteta said. “He really wants it and has found his maturity here. We are very happy with him, and I think he’s very happy here too.”
Arteta also offered his thoughts on Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day.
“I wish him all the best,” he concluded. “I really like Enzo. I think he’s done a really good job at Chelsea.”
