Mikel Arteta confirms Gabriel Jesus is likely to start vs Crystal Palace in EFL Cup

The Premier League leaders welcome Oliver Glasner’s Palace side to the Emirates Stadium as they look to keep their domestic cup hopes alive and end a six-year wait for silverware.
Jesus played a starring role the last time the two sides met in the competition, scoring a hat-trick in Arsenal’s quarter-final victory over Palace last season. However, the Gunners’ run ended in the semi-finals with defeat to Newcastle.
Shortly after that campaign, the Brazil international suffered a serious setback, rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee — an injury that sidelined him for 11 months.
Now fully fit again, Jesus has made three substitute appearances since returning and could be unleashed from the start as Arteta prepares to rotate his squad amid a demanding schedule of six matches in 20 days. Chelsea await the winners in the semi-finals.
Arteta confirmed the 28-year-old is ready for a starting role, praising his attitude and determination since returning from injury.
“You can see now, not only in games but every day in training, how much he wants it, so he’s going to deserve a chance soon,” Arteta said.
“It has been a really intense journey. When he joined us, he lifted the belief, the spirit and the energy of the team and gave us something very different to what we already had.
“Then he had some very bad injuries and that hasn’t allowed him to have the consistency we need from a very important player. But he is back, and his fighting spirit and desire to prepare in the best way is unbelievable. The team is together now and we need to use it.”
Jesus could replace Viktor Gyökeres in the starting line-up. While the striker scored from the penalty spot in Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League win at Everton, he has failed to score from open play in his last six appearances.
