A high-stakes clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium saw Melita secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Pieta’ Hotspurs, becoming the first team to punch their ticket to the BOV Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Tight First Half

The encounter began as a balanced affair, with both sides testing the waters early. Pieta’s Arthur Stelmach looked dangerous on 13 minutes, firing a powerful effort from outside the area that whistled just wide of the post.

Melita grew into the game and nearly broke the deadlock just before the interval. In the 43rd minute, a teasing cross from Moreno found Jesus Yepez Morlez, but the Pieta’ backline produced a heroic goal-line clearance to keep the score level at the break.

Yepez Decides the Tie

The deadlock didn’t stay unbroken for long after the restart. Immediately following the kickoff, Melita earned a penalty after Yepez was fouled inside the area. Jesus Yepez Morlez stepped up himself, coolly converting from the spot to give Melita the lead.

Melita remained the more proactive side for much of the second half, with the active Yepez forcing a corner via a deflected shot. Pieta’ attempted to find a way back into the match on 57 minutes, but Stelmach was again denied as his shot drifted wide.

Late Drama

As the clock ticked down, Melita had several opportunities to put the game to bed. Yepez missed a golden chance from close range, while Eric Mensah saw a superb strike fly inches wide in the 75th minute.

The drama peaked in the dying seconds of the match. Pieta’ Hotspurs threw everything forward and were desperately unlucky not to force extra time when Stelmach’s final effort struck the woodwork. Melita held on to their slim lead to celebrate a hard-fought progression in the cup.
