French superstar Kylian Mbappé is set to return for Real Madrid in Tuesday’s Champions League play-off clash against Benfica after being rested over the weekend.

The return of Madrid’s leading scorer and arguably their standout performer this season comes as a major boost for head coach Álvaro Arbeloa. However, it once again raises the tactical dilemma that has followed Los Blancos throughout the campaign — whether the team sacrifices balance when Mbappé and Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior start together in attack.

That issue becomes even more complex when Jude Bellingham is available. The England international will miss the trip to Lisbon through injury, sparing Arbeloa an additional selection headache for the showdown with José Mourinho’s side.

All three attacking stars featured when Madrid faced Benfica during the league phase in January, a night that ended in a damaging 4-2 defeat. The loss ultimately forced the Spanish giants into a play-off tie — against the same Portuguese opponents.

Mbappé scored twice in that encounter and currently leads the Champions League scoring charts with 13 goals. Yet Madrid were comprehensively outplayed, with Benfica sealing their progression thanks to a dramatic 98th-minute header from Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

With Mbappé left as an unused substitute in Saturday’s win over Real Sociedad due to minor knee discomfort, Vinícius seized the spotlight as Madrid cruised to a 4-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

The Brazilian won and converted two penalties in one of his most influential performances of an otherwise inconsistent campaign.

“Since I’ve arrived, he’s had games at a really high level,” Arbeloa said. “He’s a player who goes beyond statistics — the way he changes matches, conditions opponents, the number of defenders he attracts.

“He is one of the best in the world, and it is a privilege to coach him.”

Operating with freedom and space as Madrid’s focal point, Vinícius imposed himself decisively. However, he will share centre stage once more with Mbappé at the Estádio da Luz on Tuesday night.

“Mbappé is doing very well,” Arbeloa added. “He has dealt with minor issues for some time this season. He makes a great effort whenever he plays, and we decided not to take risks at the weekend so he can start on Tuesday. That will be the case.”

The key dilemma

Since replacing Xabi Alonso in January, Arbeloa has made clear his intention to rely heavily on Madrid’s biggest names.

Alonso’s rotation policy and merit-based selection reportedly unsettled certain senior players. Arbeloa, by contrast, appears to have adopted a more star-focused approach reminiscent of former manager Carlo Ancelotti — prioritising harmony and confidence among his leading figures.

Vinícius’ resurgence in form has coincided with Arbeloa’s appointment, following a prolonged goal drought during Alonso’s tenure. Yet the underlying structural concern remains unresolved.

While the combined brilliance of Mbappé, Vinícius, Bellingham and company can overwhelm most opponents, Madrid have also shown vulnerability against disciplined, tactically prepared sides.

The club’s first “Galáctico” era between 2000 and 2006 — featuring global icons such as Luis Figo, David Beckham and Ronaldo — serves as a cautionary tale. Despite immense talent, silverware proved limited.

Mbappé and Vinícius insist they enjoy playing together and their on-field understanding has improved since the Frenchman’s arrival last season, when both initially gravitated toward similar attacking zones.

Still, neither player is renowned for defensive intensity or relentless pressing — a reality that increases the burden on Madrid’s midfield and back line.

After the win over Real Sociedad, midfielder Federico Valverde praised the team’s collective effort.

“Everyone worked hard… you could see we defended as a team throughout the whole game,” Valverde said.

Whether Madrid can replicate that balance against Benfica — and against elite opposition later in the competition — with both Mbappé and Vinícius in the starting XI remains the defining question of their European campaign.
