Two Bundesliga fixtures have been called off due to heavy snow and ice, while a third-round FA Cup tie in England has also been postponed because of freezing conditions.

Sunday’s Bundesliga matches between St. Pauli and RB Leipzig, and Werder Bremen against Hoffenheim, were cancelled as Germany faces persistent snowfall and plunging temperatures, with more snow expected over the weekend.

St. Pauli’s Millerntor Stadium was closed after consultations with local authorities. The German football league said the decision was made due to “the large amount of snow and ice across the entire stadium grounds and the associated safety risks for everyone involved on match day, as well as the critical overall situation in Hamburg.” A new date for the match will be announced shortly. Bremen faced a similar situation.

Other Bundesliga games, including Union Berlin versus Mainz 05, may also be affected as the league resumes this weekend following a three-week winter break.

In England, Salford City’s FA Cup third-round home match against Swindon Town, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed due to sub-zero temperatures.

“Sheets have remained on the pitch over the last couple of weeks in anticipation of the forecasted sub-zero temperatures, and heat lamps have been moved around the pitch throughout the week to try and help thaw the pitch out,” the club said in a statement. “However, despite the best efforts of the ground staff, there are still parts of the pitch that are frozen. The decision has been made early in conjunction with the FA and Swindon to prevent unnecessary disruption to travelling supporters.”

Additionally, three League Two fixtures scheduled for Saturday — at Oldham Athletic, Chesterfield, and Accrington Stanley — have also been postponed due to icy conditions.
