Manchester City are expected to clarify their position on Marc Guehi this week as they consider a potential move during the January transfer window.

Sources say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether City can convince the Crystal Palace defender to join them now rather than wait until the summer, though Guehi has consistently preferred to delay any decision until the end of the season.

The England international is approaching the year with an open mind about his future and has not ruled out any destination. Allowing his contract to run down has long been considered a sensible option, as a free transfer would boost his earning potential and widen the range of clubs able to pursue him.

Interest in Guehi is widespread. Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are reportedly monitoring his situation, while Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal have tracked him closely in the Premier League. At present, City are the only club actively exploring a January deal, and an approach is expected.

A transfer fee is not seen as a major obstacle. City are aware that Liverpool agreed a £35 million fee for Guehi last summer, and a similar figure is considered acceptable. The main challenge remains personal terms. While City believe their sporting project — working under Pep Guardiola, playing alongside Erling Haaland, and competing for Premier League and Champions League titles — is highly attractive, Guehi could secure a substantial signing-on fee if he waits until the summer.

As a result, City are reportedly assessing how to structure an offer that offsets the financial benefits of a free transfer. Once formal discussions begin, Guehi’s stance is expected to become clear quickly.

The defender was part of the Crystal Palace side eliminated from the FA Cup by Macclesfield Town at the weekend, and he now faces a decision: see out the season in south London or pursue a new challenge ahead of the summer World Cup.

While a deal is far from certain, City’s recent signing of Antoine Semenyo suggests they are willing to explore the opportunity.
