Man Utd secure stunning derby triumph over City in Carrick’s dream debut

Michael Carrick’s first game as Manchester United’s interim head coach could hardly have gone better, as the Red Devils secured a well-deserved 2-0 victory over rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford. The win marked just United’s second triumph in their last eight matches across all competitions.
Despite City’s pedigree and recent dominance, the fixture proved the ideal stage for Carrick’s debut. Old Trafford buzzed with energy before kick-off, and United fed off the atmosphere, displaying intensity and aggression from the first whistle.
United came close to breaking the deadlock inside three minutes, with Harry Maguire’s header from a Bruno Fernandes corner striking the post. The hosts continued to threaten throughout the first half, though several efforts were ruled out for offside, including strikes from Amad Diallo and Fernandes after skillful runs past Donnarumma.
City, meanwhile, controlled possession but rarely tested United’s defense, aside from a Max Alleyne header that goalkeeper Senne Lammens kept out.
The second half started at a quieter pace but reignited around the hour mark. For City, goalkeeper Donnarumma remained the standout performer, producing key saves to deny Amad, Casemiro, and Bryan Mbeumo, keeping the game level.
However, United eventually broke through in the 65th minute. Fernandes drove forward and timed a perfect pass for Mbeumo, whose first-time finish found the bottom corner. City struggled to respond, unable to get their star striker Erling Haaland involved.
United capitalized on another counterattack late in the game. Substitute Matheus Cunha delivered a precise cross that Dorgu converted via the post, sealing the 2-0 win. City had further chances to reduce the deficit, but Amad hit the post, and a Mason Mount goal was ruled out for offside in stoppage time.
The result lifts United provisionally into the Premier League’s top four, while City’s title ambitions take a hit, giving leaders Arsenal a chance to extend their advantage at the summit. For Carrick, it was the perfect start, combining tactical discipline, attacking intent, and a statement victory in one of English football’s fiercest rivalries.
