Man City cruise passt Newcastle as Marmoush, Reijnders star

Manchester City cruised into the Carabao Cup final with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Newcastle United, sealing a dominant 5-1 aggregate win and extending their home winning streak against the Magpies to 12 matches.
Pep Guardiola’s side wasted little time in asserting control, with Omar Marmoush extending City’s first-leg advantage after just seven minutes. The Egyptian combined neatly with a teammate before bursting into the penalty area, where a deflection off Dan Burn’s challenge sent the ball looping beyond Aaron Ramsdale.
Newcastle threatened a response soon after, but James Trafford produced an excellent diving save to deny Joe Willock. City quickly regained momentum, with Tijjani Reijnders seeing his effort tipped wide before Malick Thiaw diverted Rayan Aït-Nouri’s strike behind for a corner.
Despite sporadic pressure from the visitors, Trafford remained alert, rushing out to thwart Anthony Gordon as Newcastle searched for a way back into the tie.
City doubled their lead moments after Kieran Trippier’s free-kick was comfortably saved. The defender failed to clear at the other end, allowing Antoine Semenyo’s cross to loop into the area for Marmoush to nod home his second of the evening.
The hosts struck again just three minutes later, with Burn again unfortunate as his attempted tackle diverted the ball into the path of Reijnders, who finished calmly to make it 3-0.
Newcastle’s frustrations deepened before half-time when Gordon was forced off injured, while Trafford continued his impressive display by pushing away Sven Botman’s header.
Eddie Howe made a triple substitution at the interval, and substitute Yoane Wissa almost made an immediate impact, but he fired wide after being released by Sandro Tonali.
At the other end, Reijnders narrowly missed out on a goal of his own after fine work from Marmoush, while Newcastle finally found a breakthrough in the 62nd minute. Anthony Elanga glided into the box and curled a precise effort in off the post to reduce the deficit.
Harvey Barnes thought he had added another soon after, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside in the build-up. He later squared for Elanga, who squandered a promising chance.
Marmoush went close to completing his hat-trick with a powerful effort over the bar, while Ramsdale denied late attempts from Erling Haaland. Nevertheless, City comfortably saw out the match to secure their first Carabao Cup final appearance since 2021.
The victory helped Guardiola’s side bounce back from their recent draw with Tottenham Hotspur and set up a final clash with Arsenal. Newcastle, meanwhile, suffered a third defeat in their last four matches across all competitions.
