A Maltese contingent representing the Malta Weightlifting Association produced an excellent showing at the London Open, held at Crystal Palace, returning home with multiple medals and newly established national records.
The competition opened on a high note for Malta, with Kim Camilleri Lagana and Aaliyah Gatt delivering strong performances. Camilleri Lagana dominated her category to secure the gold medal with an impressive total lift of 159kg, while Gatt claimed the bronze medal after registering a solid 155kg total.
Malta’s success continued in the subsequent session as Nathaniel Fenech added another bronze medal to the tally with a total of 216kg. Luke Stefan Micallef then stole the spotlight with a flawless performance, completing all six attempts to clinch gold with a total of 207kg. In the process, Micallef set new Maltese national records in the 65kg category, establishing benchmarks of 118kg in the Clean and Jerk and a new overall total record.
In the final competition of the event, the youngest member of the Maltese squad, Nathan Mifsud, displayed remarkable maturity and strength. He successfully completed all six lifts to capture the gold medal with a total of 201kg, rounding off a highly successful outing for the Maltese team.
Unfortunately, Rylee Borg and Tenishia Thornton were unable to compete as they continue their recovery from injury.
The Malta Weightlifting Association expressed its sincere appreciation to the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta for their continued support, which was instrumental in making this successful international participation possible.
