The Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) has announced the formation of its new Athletes’ Commission, which will serve for the 2026–2030 term and continue to represent the interests and perspectives of Malta’s athlete community within the organisation’s governance structure.

The Athletes’ Commission acts as the principal link between active athletes and the MOC Executive Board, ensuring that athletes’ voices are heard while providing structured input on matters relating to welfare, competition, and selection policies.

The new Commission was established following an official call for nominations across the Maltese sporting community, with candidates assessed according to eligibility criteria aligned with International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines.

The Commission comprises six athletes representing a broad range of sporting disciplines:

  • Matthew Abela – Badminton
  • Eleanor Bezzina – Shooting
  • Elliana Buhagiar – Golf
  • Aidan Buttigieg – Cycling
  • Sana Grillo – Athletics
  • Daniel Tanti Farrugia – Handball

Eleanor Bezzina and Matthew Abela bring valuable continuity to the Commission, having both served during the previous term. Following the Commission’s formation, Bezzina was elected Chair, while Abela will serve as Vice Chair.

Commenting on her appointment, Bezzina highlighted the importance of ensuring athletes are represented at the highest level of sporting governance.

“The Athletes’ Commission plays a vital role in ensuring that the voices of Maltese athletes are heard at the highest level of sporting governance. What excites me most about this new Commission is the diversity of sports represented around the table. That breadth of experience allows us to better understand the different realities faced by athletes across various disciplines and to advocate for them in a more informed and meaningful way. I look forward to working alongside my fellow Commission members to make a tangible difference for athletes in Malta over the next four years.”

In accordance with the MOC Statute, Bezzina will retain her position on the MOC Executive Board as a voting member, serving as the official athletes’ representative elected by the Athletes’ Commission and confirmed by the General Assembly. The Commission also holds two votes within the General Assembly.

Welcoming the newly appointed Commission, MOC President Julian Pace Bonello underlined the importance of athlete representation in shaping the future of Maltese sport.

“The formation of a new Athletes’ Commission is always a significant moment for the MOC. Athletes are at the heart of everything we do, and having a representative body that channels their experiences and perspectives directly to our leadership is invaluable. The calibre of those who have stepped forward for this Commission is extremely encouraging, and we are confident that their collective insight will strengthen the way we serve Maltese sport. We look forward to working closely with the new Commission and continuing our collaboration with Malta’s athlete community over the coming four years.”
