Malta FA Statement on conclusion of internal inquiry into financial discrepancy

The Malta FA refers to its statement of 4 November 2025 announcing the launch of an internal inquiry into potential financial irregularities identified by its Finance Department. This inquiry has now been completed, and its findings were submitted to the Association’s officials, who have resolved, among other actions, to refer the matter to the MFA Executive Board.
The inquiry confirmed a financial discrepancy of approximately €16,000, though it did not determine the exact cause. During today’s meeting, the Executive Board was updated on further steps taken, including the filing of a police report on 14 November 2025, the referral of the matter to the Finance Committee to review and recommend improvements to governance structures, and the initiation of internal disciplinary proceedings against the individual named in the report for an alleged breach of internal policies. This individual has been suspended since the report’s conclusion.
The Malta FA also wishes to clarify that, contrary to certain media reports—and while no possibility is being ruled out at this stage—it cannot definitively state that the discrepancy is the result of theft or any other criminal act. The matter was referred to the Executive Police to provide an added layer of oversight and scrutiny.
While the Malta FA remains open to public scrutiny, it urges media outlets to refrain from unfounded or premature speculation, as such commentary does not contribute to clarifying the situation or supporting the ongoing processes. The Association remains committed to full transparency and calls for responsible reporting as the matter continues to be addressed through the proper channels.
