Malta FA Outlines Path for Clubs to Become Commercial Entities

On May 13, 2026, the Malta FA held an information session at the Centenary Hall to guide clubs through the process of transitioning into Sports Private Limited Liability Companies (SPLLC). Following the publication of Legal Notice 91 of 2026, this new framework allows local sports clubs to operate as commercial entities, providing greater financial flexibility, stability, and improved competitiveness against foreign counterparts.
A SPLLC is a corporate entity registered under the Companies Act, taking on full responsibility for a club’s management, operations, and administration.
Malta FA Senior Vice President Dr. Matthew Paris highlighted the legislative developments, licensing changes, and the steps required for conversion, reinforcing the Association’s commitment to professionalizing football. “Presently, most clubs are voluntary organizations with limited commercial capacity. This structure enables them to generate revenue and reinvest directly back into their sports organisation,” Dr. Paris explained.
The session, attended by club representatives, MFA officials, and external stakeholders, covered the legislation, mandatory obligations, and a practical roadmap for conversion. Key emphasis was placed on the financial requirements, including the settlement of outstanding debt (excluding non-overdue payables) and General Assembly approval of a financial plan.
The Malta FA remains committed to supporting clubs throughout this transformative process, strengthening the professional framework of Maltese football.
