Hamburger SV extended their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga to six matches (W2, D4) with a 1-1 draw against Mainz 05, who have now suffered just two defeats in their 12 games since Urs Fischer took charge.

Mainz take an early lead

Mainz started strongly, but their momentum was quickly blunted as Hamburg slowed the game and began to exert control. The visitors created opportunities of their own: Warmed Omari saw a shot from the edge of the area saved by the alert hands of Daniel Batz, followed by Robert Glatzel’s effort which lacked precision and was comfortably held.

Despite Hamburg’s pressure, Mainz struck just before half-time. Danny da Costa surged down the right flank and delivered a low cross into the six-yard box, where Nadiem Amiri met it with a hooked volley to find the far post — his seventh Bundesliga goal in as many appearances.

Hamburg fight back

After the break, Mainz struggled to maintain their rhythm, chasing the game and committing unnecessary fouls. Dominik Kohr was fortunate to avoid a second yellow card during one such incident.

It was this indiscipline that ultimately allowed Hamburg to equalise. From a 25-yard free kick, Fabio Vieira attempted to curl the ball to the near post, but it deflected off Phillipp Mwene and wrong-footed Batz, nestling into the opposite side of the net.

Sheraldo Becker came closest to snatching a winner for Mainz late on, his looping volley narrowly missing the far post, but the match ended level.

A point for momentum

With both sides enjoying strong form and looking upward rather than over their shoulders, the draw will be welcomed by Hamburg and Mainz alike.

For Hamburg, this marks their longest top-flight unbeaten run since 2011, when they went nine games without defeat under Thorsten Fink. Their next test comes against RB Leipzig at home in early March.

Mainz, meanwhile, continue their push to move away from the relegation zone, having now lost just once in their last five matches.
