Looking to rebound from back-to-back Ligue 1 defeats, Lyon made the ideal start against Basel, striking just three minutes into the match to set the tone for a confident performance.

The opener came courtesy of a defensive lapse from the visitors. Goalkeeper Marwin Hitz played a careless pass that was intercepted by the alert Mathys De Carvalho, allowing Corentin Tolisso to calmly lift the ball over the onrushing keeper for 1–0.

Basel threatened briefly through Xherdan Shaqiri and Albian Ajeti, the latter seeing his close-range effort blocked, but such moments were rare as the Swiss side struggled to impose themselves in the first half.

At the other end, Martin Satriano twice went close to doubling Lyon’s advantage — first flashing a low shot across the face of goal, then directing a tame header into Hitz’s arms before the break.

Having now scored in 12 consecutive matches across all competitions, Les Gones continued to dictate play after the interval. Only a sharp stop from Hitz at his near post denied Malick Fofana early in the second half as Lyon pushed to extend their lead.

Basel were restricted to half-chances, with Tyler Morton and Clinton Mata making key defensive interventions to snuff out danger. Dominik Greif then preserved Lyon’s lead late on, producing an important save to deny Leo Leroy a potential equaliser.

In stoppage time, Afonso Moreira sealed the result with a composed finish, ending Basel’s run of three consecutive clean-sheet victories in all competitions.

The win reinforces Lyon’s strong home record in Europe — just one defeat in their last 18 Europa League group-stage or league-phase games at the Groupama Stadium (W14, D4). Under Paulo Fonseca, they now sit comfortably in the top eight after three matchdays, maintaining their perfect European campaign.
