Luis Enrique Criticizes PSG’s ‘Gifted’ Errors in Champions League Loss to Bayern Munich

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique acknowledged that his team handed Bayern Munich “big gifts” during their 2-1 Champions League defeat on Tuesday but insisted he was not making excuses, despite a mounting list of injuries in the defending champions’ squad.
PSG struggled in the first half, falling 2-0 behind after a Luis Diaz double. The Colombian winger was later sent off for a dangerous tackle on Achraf Hakimi, who had to be substituted before halftime, joining Ousmane Dembele in leaving the pitch due to injury.
“We’ll have to wait until tomorrow after the tests,” Luis Enrique said at a press conference.
“Ousmane’s injury has nothing to do with the previous one. It’s football—it’s a contact sport. It’s unlucky for the player, but these things happen, just like it happened to Bayern’s Jamal Musiala against PSG at the Club World Cup last July.”
PSG have been hit hard by injuries this season, with Dembele, Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola, Joao Neves, and Fabian Ruiz all sidelined at various points.
While Luis Enrique admitted he needed to manage his squad more carefully, he stressed that he was not seeking excuses.
“In the first half, they were better than us. They created more chances, and we made some big gifts,” he said. “When you hand gifts to players of that caliber, it’s normal to lose—you could even concede more goals.”
PSG showed improvement after the break but were unable to turn sustained possession into goals. “We did the job well in the second half and could have drawn the game,” Enrique added.
Despite the defeat, the coach remained composed.
“I can’t remember a single match this season with the whole team fit,” he said.
“We have to manage that. I’m not looking for excuses—it’s our responsibility to do better. I’m calm and confident we’ll recover our players and our level. We’ve still played some very good matches.”
The result leaves Bayern Munich at the top of their Champions League group with a perfect 12 points, while PSG sit third, three points behind.
