West Ham United’s problems may be mounting, with growing speculation that Lucas Paquetá could down tools in an effort to force a return to Brazil.

Sources close to the midfielder have played down suggestions of outright strike action, insisting he has no intention of refusing to play. However, there is increasing concern and frustration within the club over Paquetá’s current attitude and level of application.

Uncertainty surrounding his future has lingered since last summer, when both Aston Villa and Tottenham made approaches. Although Paquetá ultimately remained at the London Stadium, it has since become apparent that his commitment to West Ham may not be what it once was.

He is now at the centre of a developing transfer battle, with Flamengo eager to bring him back to Brazil. Paquetá came through the ranks at the Rio de Janeiro club, and a return is understood to appeal strongly to the player.

Paquetá endured a difficult spell in England while a betting investigation was ongoing, and there is a belief inside the game that the experience has played a significant role in his desire to move on.

Sources indicate there have been fresh inquiries in recent weeks. Villa and Spurs have again made informal contact, while Chelsea are also thought to hold an interest. However, it is understood that a move to another Premier League club is not currently under consideration.

West Ham would prefer to block a transfer altogether and have maintained that position as speculation over a return to Brazil gathers pace. The club expect further contact from Flamengo in the coming hours but are holding firm on a valuation that could make any deal difficult.

An initial approach from Flamengo has already been rejected, with West Ham believed to value Paquetá at close to £50 million. Flamengo, by contrast, are thought to be willing to spend no more than £30 million — a gap that currently appears significant.

Manager Nuno Espírito Santo is understood to have urged Paquetá to put transfer concerns to one side and focus on the remainder of the season, with West Ham locked in a relegation battle.

Despite this, whispers have emerged from within the club suggesting the possibility of Paquetá refusing to play again. Those close to the situation continue to downplay the likelihood of strike action, but whether he continues to train and prepare as normal will be closely monitored.

Paquetá’s response in the coming days could prove pivotal. West Ham are keen to avoid a public confrontation or damaging fallout at a time when they are attempting to rebuild the squad and stabilise their season.

The Hammers face rivals Tottenham this weekend in a crucial fixture that could heap further pressure on the club. Should Paquetá depart, he would require replacing — a distraction West Ham can ill afford at such a critical juncture.
