Liverpool Under Pressure to End Poor Run as Man City Prepare for Bournemouth Test

Liverpool face an in-form Aston Villa on Saturday as the Premier League champions look to stop their alarming slump, while Arsenal aim to tighten their grip on the title race.
The Gunners hold a four-point advantage over Bournemouth, who travel to face Manchester City before Arsenal’s trip to Burnley. Third-placed Tottenham remain just five points off the top but are desperate to end a three-match winless run at home when they host Chelsea in a heated London derby.
AFP Sport looks at three of the weekend’s key fixtures.
Slot Feels the Heat
Liverpool manager Arne Slot is under mounting pressure after his side’s League Cup exit at the hands of Crystal Palace on Wednesday compounded a miserable run of results.
Slot rotated heavily for that match, making ten changes as Palace cruised to a 3-0 win at Anfield. The Dutchman defended his decision, insisting he couldn’t risk further injuries with a congested schedule that includes crucial clashes against Real Madrid and Manchester City.
“I don’t think it’s possible to have even more pressure when you’ve lost six of seven,” Slot said. “If you play for or manage Liverpool, you know the pressure comes with it.”
Liverpool’s collapse has been dramatic. Just five games into the season, they were 12 points clear of Aston Villa; now, four matches later, the sides are level on points — separated only by goal difference.
Villa have surged back into form with four straight wins, including impressive victories over Tottenham and City, to reassert themselves in the Champions League race.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s title defence has crumbled. The Reds have failed to keep a clean sheet in ten matches, as Slot continues to search for balance in a squad heavily reshaped during the summer. Despite spending a Premier League record £450 million, Liverpool lost more players than they signed — with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Díaz among the most sorely missed.
Former defender Jamie Carragher summed up the mood bluntly:
“To see the champions lose four league games in a row with that level of spending — I think we’re in crisis time for Liverpool right now.”
Bournemouth’s Unbeaten Run Faces City Test
The Premier League’s longest unbeaten streak faces its toughest challenge yet on Sunday as Bournemouth travel to the Etihad Stadium, hoping to dent Manchester City’s title ambitions.
The Cherries haven’t lost since the opening day defeat to Liverpool, a run that has sparked genuine hopes of European qualification — a first in the club’s history.
City, however, are looking to bounce back after a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa ended their nine-game unbeaten stretch and left them six points adrift of Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola’s concerns over his side’s reliance on Erling Haaland have grown — no other City player has scored more than once in the Premier League this season.
There was some encouragement in midweek, though, as Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki, both recently back from injury, found the net in a 3-1 League Cup win over Swansea, giving Guardiola more attacking options ahead of the weekend.
Spurs Seek Home Comfort
Thomas Frank has made an impressive start at Tottenham, solving the club’s long-standing away woes — but home form remains a concern.
Of Spurs’ 17 points from nine games, 13 have come on the road, thanks to notable wins at Manchester City, West Ham, Leeds, and Everton.
In contrast, north London has been less kind: Bournemouth and Villa have both won at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while bottom side Wolves held them to a frustrating 1-1 draw.
“We want our home to be a fortress,” Frank said. “It can’t just be the team or the fans — it has to be both. We need to bring energy to each other, work unbelievably hard, and stay positive.”
A victory over Chelsea — which would be only Spurs’ second league win against their rivals since 2018 — would go a long way toward winning over any remaining doubters among the home support.
