Liverpool boss Arne Slot calls Newcastle game crucial in top-four battle

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted that Saturday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United could prove decisive in the race for a top-four finish.
The Reds currently sit sixth, two points behind fourth and three points ahead of the Magpies. Speaking ahead of the match, Slot said:
“Every game is crucial, but the way we are positioned now makes every match vital because top four is our target. Newcastle are always tough opponents, and this will be another challenging game for both sides. A home match at Anfield is something to look forward to after good results during the week.”
Liverpool go into the weekend on the back of a 6-0 Champions League victory over Qarabag, but Slot cautioned that one strong performance is not enough to erase inconsistencies in the league.
“Winning always helps, especially after qualifying for the last 16, but one win is never enough at this club,” he said. “The bigger challenge lies ahead in the league. Every period is pivotal, and as the season nears its end, mistakes are increasingly costly. We’ve conceded too many late goals, so there is no room for error.”
Injury and Squad Updates
Slot confirmed that Jeremie Frimpong will miss a few weeks after sustaining an injury against Qarabag, though it is not as serious as initially feared.
“Frimpong will definitely miss tomorrow, but it’s not as bad as first thought,” Slot said. “(Ibrahima) Konate trained today and will be in the squad, along with Curtis Jones, who has recovered from illness. Joe Gomez remains unavailable for the weekend.”
Slot also addressed Liverpool’s plans in the loan market, hinting at potential short-term cover for the right-back position.
“If we think a player can help and it’s possible, we will pursue it. Those discussions don’t happen in this room, and that’s all I can say for now.”
Regarding Harvey Elliott, currently on loan at Aston Villa, Slot remained diplomatic: “It was pleasing to see him on the pitch yesterday. He’s a Villa player at the moment, which is all I can say.”
Working with Mohamed Salah
Wednesday’s Qarabag win also saw Mohamed Salah score his first goal since returning from AFCON. Slot praised the striker’s commitment following the pre-Christmas tensions:
“It’s always about the team, and we are creating promising positions for attackers. Salah, Federico, and Florian Wirtz all did well to be on the scoresheet. The goal was deserved and showed their contribution to the team’s performance.”
Slot added that adjustments to right-back cover can affect wingers’ overlapping runs, but he remains confident in the squad’s adaptability:
“Wataru Endo can make inside and overlapping runs. Different from Frimpong, but smart positioning allows our attackers to operate effectively.”
Premier League Challenges
Reflecting on Liverpool’s domestic struggles, Slot noted the increased physicality and set-piece demands in the Premier League compared to Europe:
“The Premier League is more of a box-focused game, with physicality and set-pieces at a high level. In the Champions League, play between the boxes is more critical. That’s why we see different challenges here.”
Youth Progress
Slot also praised Rio Nguhoma, who featured again against Qarabag, highlighting the winger’s growing importance:
“Rio comes in at critical moments and has developed nicely. Step by step, he’s gaining the trust of the manager and is now considered a game-changer in key moments.”
Liverpool face Newcastle at Anfield knowing that a win could be pivotal in securing a top-four finish, with squad fitness, tactical adjustments, and emerging youth set to play a crucial role in the outcome.
