Liverpool back in business with 3–0 win at Marseille

Liverpool climbed to fourth in the UEFA Champions League group with a commanding 3–0 win over Marseille, extending their unbeaten streak across all competitions to 13 games (W7, D6).
Roberto De Zerbi’s side welcomed the six-time European champions to Stade Vélodrome after scoring 14 goals in their previous two matches, and Marseille knew they faced a tough challenge after Liverpool’s November win over Newcastle United.
The hosts started brightly, coming close to an early lead when Alexis Mac Allister’s right-footed strike narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Hugo Ekitike thought he had opened the scoring, but his effort was ruled out for offside after mistiming his run from Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross.
Marseille struggled to find consistent attacking rhythm, though Mason Greenwood’s floated free-kick created a chance for Amine Gouiri, whose well-struck effort forced Alisson into a strong two-handed save.
Liverpool eventually broke the deadlock just before halftime. Szoboszlai’s free-kick sneaked under Marseille’s jumping wall and beat Geronimo Rulli at his near post, marking the Hungarian’s sixth goal contribution in his last five UCL appearances (G4, A2) and closing a cagey first 45 minutes.
After the break, Liverpool intensified their attack. Greenwood tested Rulli twice with quickfire attempts, one parried and the other narrowly off target, as the game finally opened up. Ekitike hit the woodwork from Szoboszlai’s through ball, and Hamed Traore blazed over on a rapid Marseille counter, but Liverpool remained dominant.
The second goal arrived in the 72nd minute through Jeremie Frimpong. The right-back muscled past Igor Paixao and delivered a low cross that Facundo Medina inadvertently turned into his own net. Cody Gakpo added a third with a clinical finish after being set up by Ryan Gravenberch, sealing a comprehensive victory for Arne Slot’s men on the Côte d’Azur.
The win keeps Liverpool on track for automatic qualification to the Champions League round of 16, while Marseille will need a strong performance against Club Brugge in matchday eight to secure a play-off spot, following their fourth consecutive UCL head-to-head defeat against the Reds.
