Leverkusen held at Mönchengladbach in costly top-four draw

Bayer Leverkusen were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw away at Borussia Mönchengladbach, ending their long run without a league stalemate and denting their push in the Bundesliga’s top-four race. The result also brought Gladbach a measure of relief, as they avoided defeat in a home head-to-head against Leverkusen for the first time since 2018.
Eager to disrupt Leverkusen’s recent pattern of alternating wins and losses, Gladbach made the brighter start and were rewarded inside the opening 10 minutes. Pressure on Aleix García following a loose pass from goalkeeper Janis Blaswich led to Haris Tabakovic firing at goal, and although Blaswich made the initial save, the rebound fell kindly for Yannik Engelhardt, who drilled a sharp finish inside the near post from a tight angle.
Leverkusen struggled to respond to the early setback, finding it difficult to generate rhythm in the final third as Gladbach continued to look the more threatening side. Jens Castrop came close to doubling the hosts’ advantage with a powerful effort that Blaswich did well to keep out, but despite their dominance, Gladbach were undone by misfortune just before the interval.
Malik Tillman teed up García on the edge of the area, and while his strike looked routine, Philipp Sander’s attempted clearance went horribly wrong, slicing the ball beyond Moritz Nicolas and into the top corner to hand Leverkusen an unlikely equaliser.
Kasper Hjulmand wasn’t content to stand still at the break and made changes that nearly paid off immediately, with Patrik Schick seeing his effort graze the outside of the post early in the second half. However, that spell of pressure quickly faded, allowing Gladbach back into the contest as Castrop spurned a pair of promising opportunities.
The intensity increased as the derby atmosphere took hold, producing an open and frenetic final stretch, but neither side could find the composure required in front of goal. As a result, Gladbach were left to settle for a third draw in four matches — a result that does little to ease concerns given their fragile league position, particularly after holding a deserved lead for much of the contest.
For Leverkusen, the draw extends their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions, and attention will now turn to their upcoming UEFA Champions League play-off clash with Olympiacos later this month.
