Lamar Jackson labels patriots clash ‘special’ as Ravens fight to keep playoff hopes alive

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens face a crucial primetime showdown against the high-flying New England Patriots on Sunday, knowing anything less than a win could derail their NFL playoff hopes.
Once considered Super Bowl favorites by many pundits, the Ravens have endured a frustrating, injury-plagued season and currently sit second in the AFC North with three games remaining.
Momentum, however, is on Baltimore’s side after a 24-0 shutout of the Cincinnati Bengals—their first and only of the season—achieved in freezing temperatures.
Desperate to catch divisional rivals Pittsburgh Steelers, the Ravens face a Patriots team still in contention for the AFC’s top seed.
“I have to worry about the Patriots. I can’t think ahead to the playoffs. I have to focus on these guys because it’s an explosive defense and an explosive offense. So we have to lock in,” Jackson said.
The two-time NFL MVP has battled injuries and missed practice this week due to illness, but downplayed any concerns over his readiness. “No matter where we’re at… this game is special,” he added.
The Patriots come off a rare setback, losing 35-31 to the Buffalo Bills after leading 21-0. Quarterback Drake Maye admitted the loss “stings” but insisted the team had learned key lessons to take into Sunday’s matchup. A win would keep New England within striking distance of the NFL-leading Denver Broncos.
Other Playoff Contenders
This weekend is pivotal for several teams with playoff aspirations. The Pittsburgh Steelers host the Detroit Lions, with the winner potentially securing control of their postseason destiny. The Lions sit just outside the playoff picture.
In the AFC, the league-leading Denver Broncos (12-2), riding an 11-game win streak and undefeated at home, face the Jacksonville Jaguars. Denver could clinch the No. 1 seed and a first-round playoff bye with a win and favorable results elsewhere. Jacksonville, winners of five straight, also have a chance to secure a postseason berth depending on other outcomes.
Meanwhile, NFC South co-leaders Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers go head-to-head, with the winner well-positioned for a January playoff run.
The Los Angeles Chargers, also fighting for a playoff spot, take on a struggling Dallas Cowboys team, while the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles can clinch the NFC East with a win over the Washington Commanders on Saturday.
