The Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport (AIMS) has announced the appointment of Kevin Azzopardi as its new Chief Executive Officer, following a public call for applications.

Mr Azzopardi brings with him over three decades of experience in Maltese sport, having served in a range of leadership roles across education, administration, and sports governance.

A graduate in Physical Education from the University of Malta (2002), Mr Azzopardi spent 12 years teaching at Mtarfa Boys Secondary School and Stella Maris College before being appointed Education Officer (Physical Education & Sport) within the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation in 2014. During his tenure, he led significant reforms that elevated the sector to national priority status, overseeing initiatives such as the National Sport School, the Sport Career Development Programme, and the Malta School Games.

He also holds a Master’s degree in Comparative Euro-Mediterranean Education Studies and is currently pursuing doctoral research at the University of Malta’s Institute for Maltese Studies, focusing on the sociocultural identity that popular and traditional sports bring to Maltese towns and villages.

Mr Azzopardi’s sporting background is equally distinguished. A former football referee for 18 years, including at international level, he later served as Director of Refereeing at the Malta FA and as a UEFA Referee Observer. He also worked as Referee Development Officer with Northumberland FA (UK).

Since 2021, he has held the post of Secretary General of the Maltese Olympic Committee, where he played a key role in organizing the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe in Malta. He also contributed to Malta and Gozo’s successful bid to host the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games and was instrumental in Gozo’s membership within the International Island Games Association.

Within the Maltese Olympic Committee, Mr Azzopardi was Malta’s sole representative in Sport Integrity matters, liaising with the Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions under the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation congratulated Mr Azzopardi on his appointment and extended its best wishes for success in his new role at AIMS.
