Kercem Ajax progress on penalties after draw with Qala Saints
Kercem Ajax booked their place in the next round of the MFA BOV Challenge Cup after defeating Qala Saints 4-2 on penalties at the Gozo Stadium, following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
Qala made the brighter start and took the lead on 16 minutes when Ibrahim Mohammed found the net to give his side a deserved advantage.
Kercem pushed for an equaliser after the break and were rewarded on 73 minutes as Romulo Cicolin Bosquerio struck to level the score and force the tie into a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Kercem held their nerve. Nenen converted the opening kick, while Bosquerio saw his effort saved. Gianluca Muscat, Eduardo Coimbra and Lorenzo Atzori all scored to put Kercem firmly in control.
Qala’s hopes faded after Joseph Zammit hit the post with their first penalty. Although Gabriel Cardona and Jordi Parnis converted, Sergipe’s effort sailed over the bar, sealing a 4-2 shootout victory for Kercem.
Referee Igor Kankaras officiated the encounter.
