Kane, Mbappé and the stars leading the Ballon d’Or race in 2026

The Ballon d’Or remains one of football’s most hotly debated annual awards and the most prestigious individual honour the sport has to offer, reserved for those who truly define an era.
After years of domination by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the landscape has shifted. Ousmane Dembélé and Rodri have claimed the prize in the past two editions, ushering in a more open and unpredictable race — one made even more intriguing by the presence of the 2026 World Cup.
With the Ballon d’Or now judged on a season-by-season basis rather than the calendar year, the start of 2026 feels like the ideal moment to assess the leading contenders.
Harry Kane (Bayern Munich, England)
Harry Kane has emerged as one of the standout frontrunners after a prolific campaign with Bayern Munich.
Traditionally, the Ballon d’Or favours players who excel across multiple fronts — domestic league success, deep Champions League runs, and major international tournaments. Kane is currently ticking all three boxes.
Bayern are unbeaten in the Bundesliga and sit nine points clear at the summit, putting Kane firmly on course for a league title. Individually, the England captain has been devastating: 19 goals in the league, five in the Champions League and five more in the German Cup.
If that form continues and Bayern deliver silverware, Kane’s case will be hard to ignore. A strong showing — or even a triumph — with England at the World Cup could ultimately prove decisive.
Erling Haaland (Manchester City, Norway)
Erling Haaland often feels underappreciated in Ballon d’Or discussions due to his role as a specialist finisher rather than a conventional all-rounder. Yet his output remains extraordinary.
The Manchester City striker has already scored 19 Premier League goals this season, alongside six in the Champions League and an eye-catching 16 in World Cup qualifying — four of which came late last season.
Haaland’s goals powered Norway to a surprise World Cup qualification, and a strong debut tournament on the global stage would significantly enhance his credentials. However, with Norway unlikely to lift the trophy, his hopes may rest heavily on club success.
City remain in the title race alongside Arsenal and are still alive in both domestic cup competitions, though the Champions League will present their stiffest test.
Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid, France)
Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappé completes the trio of leading candidates.
The Frenchman has been relentless in front of goal, scoring 18 times in La Liga and nine in the Champions League — making him the leading scorer in both competitions. His influence has been central to Madrid’s strong campaign, with the Spanish giants second domestically and on the verge of securing a Champions League knockout place.
Internationally, Mbappé remains the focal point of a France side expected to challenge seriously at the World Cup. He could even become the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Should Mbappé combine personal records with major trophies, his path to the Ballon d’Or would be a compelling one.
Lamine Yamal (Barcelona, Spain)
Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal represents a fascinating outside bet.
Widely regarded as the most exciting young talent in world football, the winger has already recorded 23 goal contributions for club and country this season. Barcelona sit top of La Liga and appear capable of mounting a deep Champions League run, while Spain are among the favourites for World Cup glory.
In theory, an exceptional second half of the season paired with significant silverware could see Yamal claim the Ballon d’Or at just 19 years old. More realistically, however, he is expected to secure the Kopa Trophy for best under-21 player — potentially for a third time.
Lionel Messi (Inter Miami, Argentina)
Lionel Messi needs little introduction. With eight Ballon d’Or titles already to his name, another win appears improbable — but not impossible.
The Argentine has enjoyed a remarkable 2026 in MLS, finishing as MVP, top scorer and leading assist provider while guiding Inter Miami to their first championship. The level of competition and the league’s differing calendar work against him in the voting.
Still, if Messi were to inspire Argentina to another World Cup triumph and dominate on the biggest stage once again, sentiment — combined with excellence — could yet deliver an extraordinary final chapter to his Ballon d’Or story.
