Italy secured a 2–0 win over Moldova at Zimbru Stadium thanks to two late goals, extending their winning streak against the Eastern European side to seven matches.

Earlier on Thursday, Norway’s 4–1 victory over Estonia effectively ended Italy’s hopes of automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup. Still, the Azzurri were determined to finish the night with a win and at least delay Norway’s celebrations.

As expected against a team with just one point from six games in this qualification cycle, Italy dominated from the outset. Gennaro Gattuso’s men applied relentless pressure, but the first half ended goalless. Moldova goalkeeper Andriy Kozhukhar produced key saves, particularly denying Bryan Cristante, while the Moldovan defense made several last-ditch interventions to keep the scoreline level.

Italy had other chances that went begging: Gianluca Mancini somehow fired over the bar with the goal gaping, and Cristante’s long-range effort narrowly missed. Moldova’s only notable attack came just after the half-hour mark when Virgiliu Postolachi volleyed over from close range while unmarked.

The second half saw Italy continue to dominate possession but create fewer clear-cut opportunities. Sandro Tonali tested Kozhukhar, and substitute Mateo Retegui’s header was comfortably saved, but overall Italy could have threatened the Moldovan goalkeeper far more. Moldova occasionally ventured forward but rarely troubled the visitors.

Finally, Italy broke through in the 88th minute, with Mancini atoning for his earlier miss by heading home his second international goal. Deep into stoppage time, Pio Esposito added a second to seal the win.

Despite the victory, Italy will likely need to reach the World Cup via the playoffs, even with a final group match against Norway at San Siro on Sunday, as the Scandinavians’ superior goal difference leaves the Azzurri behind.

For Moldova, the defeat was a narrow escape from what could have been one of the most remarkable wins in their history, which would have offered a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing qualification campaign.
