Bayer Leverkusen’s search for a new head coach appears to be drawing to a close, with reports suggesting the club is close to an appointment. According to Kicker, Leverkusen are in the “final negotiations” with AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. The 43-year-old Spaniard is expected to replace Kasper Hjulmand, who, despite being under contract until 2027, is reportedly set to depart.

Following Brazilian coach Filipe Luís—who is said to be nearing a move to AS Monaco—rejecting the role, Sky reports that Leverkusen are now “pushing” to secure Iraola’s signature and are hopeful of reaching a swift agreement.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, fresh from winning the Conference League, is also understood to be among the candidates considered by the Bundesliga club.

Successful spell in the Premier League

Andoni Iraola, a Basque like Bayer Leverkusen’s title-winning coach Xabi Alonso, enjoyed a highly successful spell at AFC Bournemouth. He set a new points record in each of his three seasons at the club and recently guided them through an 18-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Bournemouth narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification, finishing sixth in the table. Iraola had already confirmed his departure in April, with former Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose set to take over his role.

At Leverkusen, Kasper Hjulmand—who took charge after the second Bundesliga matchday last season—is expected to leave following a disappointing second half of the campaign, which ended with a sixth-place finish.
